Tuong Viet II - 2022 @ RISD
Instructor: Emily S. Rye

Identity system for a series of 4 events at the same location.
Continuing to explore ways to convey and preserve the Vietnamese art of Tuong (Hat boi/ Traditional opera). A focus on foreign visitors and youth.

A series of 4 flyers, a poster and a website were created with a focus on the bilingual aespect of design. Names were typesetted in the open-source Vietnamese font Phu Du and were deconstructed to form a minimal yet friendly and expressive modular identity system for the event.

The early attempt to capture the essence of Tuong was very literal and lacking an effective design system. As I think more about the different elements that make up Tuong, I was fascinated by the beauty of the Vietnamese language and the interesting way that Vietnamese translated into English. I found that the accent marks in Vietnamese allow the type to look a lot more expressive. And by strategically using color with these marks, the system can be bilingual without cluttering the overall design.

After doing a small survey, I found that type hierarchy is arguably the most important factor to the legibility of a bilingual campaign. The restrictive nature of the small mobile screen has forced me to focus on the smallest details and significantly improve the hierarchy of the entire system.

Each flyer introduces one classic play/ performance of Vietnamese Tuong (Opera).
