I have had the amazing opportunity to work closely with Jason and Matthew on the launch of Headmaster No. 10: The Sports Issue in Spring 2024, which is also the last issue of this queer art magazine. The issue features original projects by twelve artists and artist duos who have explored assigned sports-related topics.

The identity of this magazine issue was based on in-depth research into the visuals and politics of the 1968 Olympic in Mexico City. 11 icons were meticulously crafted to each represent a featured assignments.

“To be is to leave a trace—however slight, however fleeting.”

Here for Now captures the ephemeral nature of the curatorial direction through the motif of cyanotype and analog textures, carried across cyanotyped bookmarks, risograph-printed catalogs, and hand-delivered invitations.

Tasked with bringing the exhibition’s visual narrative to life, I conceptualized and created custom illustrations that were used across the event. Beyond digital assets, I managed the end-to-end production of branded ephemera, including custom-printed Risograph stickers designed to boost attendee engagement.

Designing typefaces that accommodate the Vietnamese language is a rigorous process that requires very particular knowledges and cultural understandings which is why the majority of typefaces today still lack proper support. Thus, we were deeply impressed as we learned about the work ethics and designpractice of the young professional Vietnamese type designer Harry Đinh (@blurrygrains).

A controlled chaos aesthetic was chosen to capture the non-linear design process of Harry and the essence of Vietnamese cultures.

The 1989 interview with Trinh T. Minh Ha, a Vietnamese-American theorist, composer, educator and filmmaker, was fully transcribed and transformed into a publication that embraces the idea of slow reading and non-conforming creativity. From the overlapping of 2 bright riso colors to the unstable binding of rubber band, I intended to completely disrupt the audience’s reading pattern to fully capture the experience of reading as if “listening” to Ms.Trinh talking.

The 2 riso colors are strategically chosen to create traditional anaglyph effect with a modern twist, a digital viewing lens on the web. The web app (can be access below) put a filter on the viewer’s phone camera without storing any user data.

Last but not least, 3 different illustrations were done inspired by each of the film Ms.Trinh mentioned in the conversation.
